How Do I Know If LATERA Is Right for Me?

latera in office

Struggling to breathe well? While breathing issues can have one of many causes, breathing issues caused by a condition called nasal valve collapse can be helped by a nasal implant called LATERA.

What is LATERA, and how does it work?

LATERA is a nasal implant that can be implanted within one or both nostrils to provide better structure to improve the ability to breathe. It does this by providing support to the cartilage in the nose. The procedure takes just a few minutes per nostril and can be done in the office. It involves delivering the implants via a cannula.

The implants are bioabsorbable and fully absorb over the course of 18 months. In case of any issues after placement, LATERA implants can be removed, but complications are rare.

How long does LATERA last?

The LATERA implant remains in the body for about 18 months, after which it is absorbed. A collagen matrix replaces the implants during this time, so benefits can last beyond the initial 18 months.

How do I know if LATERA can help me?

The best way to find out is to visit your ENT specialist, who can check for the cause of your breathing trouble and determine if LATERA is right for you. LATERA helps with nasal valve collapse. To check for this, your doctor may use special instruments or perform an endoscopy. They may also perform a simple test called Cottle’s maneuver, which you can also do at home as explained below.

At-home method for checking for nasal valve collapse: Cottle’s maneuver

The Cottle’s maneuver is often used to check for nasal valve collapse and is so simple you can perform it on yourself at home. Hold a finger or two on either side of your nose positioned about midway down the nose and under the middle of your eyes. Pull gently toward your ears, and note whether this improves your ability to breathe. If so, you may benefit from LATERA!
