Eyelid Surgery to remove under eye wrinkles

Under eye wrinkles

Of the many types of wrinkles that can occur on the face, under eye wrinkles often are one of the first to show up, due to the thin skin in the area. In fact, they can show up as early as the twenties. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is a procedure that can help drastically improve the look of the under eye area. This surgery also gets rid of puffiness or “eye bags” as well.

How do under eye wrinkles happen?

Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, but can be sped up by external factors like sun damage and smoking. As we age, we lose elasticity in our skin, and it loses the ability to replenish itself. The production of certain key components of skin health such as collagen and hyaluronic acid is greatly reduced. There are creams and serums that can help, but they only do so much. Wrinkles are of two types: dynamic and static. Dynamic wrinkles are those that show up only with movement, such as crow’s feet that only show up when smiling. Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are wrinkles that are present at all times, even when the face is at rest.

Lower blepharoplasty for under eye wrinkles

During this outpatient procedure, your plastic surgeon will cut away a small amount of excess skin to stretch out the rest of the skin, allowing for wrinkles to be “smoothed out.” Depending on your needs, your doctor may also reposition fat under the eyes to eliminate under eye bags as well and use the fat to fill in any sunken-in parts of the undereye area. Recovery is generally quick and swelling is usually reduced by about 2 weeks post-surgery.

Is a lower blepharoplasty procedure effective for under eye wrinkles?

Lower blepharoplasty is a very effective way to reduce the appearance of under eye wrinkles. Results are practically permanent, meaning the old wrinkles you had will not come back. However, due to further aging, more laxity in the skin can lead to the development of new wrinkles. This process often takes a decade or more. At this point fillers or further surgery may be desired or recommended.
