Do You Have Ears That Stick Out? Here Are Your Surgical Options

Ears come in all shapes and sizes. There’s a wide variety of what looks “normal” when it comes to the ears, but sometimes, ears can fall outside the usual range when it comes to size, shape, or angle. Do you have ears that stick out? Keep reading!

What are ears that stick out?

Ears that stick out prominently and noticeably from the head are considered to be protruding. Generally, protruding ears are when ears stick out more than 2 cm from the head. This is usually caused by abnormalities in the growth of the ears, causing an unusual structure to the ears, which pushes them away from the head. When discovered in early infancy, it may be possible to reposition the ears through molding. However, this only has the potential to work if done in the first few weeks after birth.

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty is plastic surgery on the ears. Otoplasties can be done for many different reasons, some medical, some aesthetic. Ears can be made to be bigger or smaller, and they can be reshaped if they have unusual features due to injury or congenital abnormalities. They can also be repositioned, as is the case with ears that stick out from the head.

Otoplasty: Before and After

Who can get an otoplasty?

Otoplasties are generally a safe procedure. Most people get this surgery as a child, although many get it as an adult. If a parent wants to get their child an otoplasty, they are advised to wait until age 5, when the ears are done growing and have reached their full size. As with all surgeries, ideally, the patient should not be a smoker, but smokers can quit for a set period of time before surgery. The surgeon will go over all medical history to ensure that the patient is a good candidate for surgery and discuss any medications taken to determine whether pausing is needed.

How do otoplasties for ears that stick out work?

During ear surgery to help pin back ears, the surgeon will reshape the ear’s cartilage to help the ears sit closer to the head, and the incisions are placed behind the ears, so any possible scarring is less visible. This procedure is done in an outpatient setting (no hospital stay needed). Bandages are worn for a couple of weeks after the procedure to help heal and assist the ears in maintaining their new position.
