How to Keep Your Skin Safe This Summer

sun damaged skin treatment

Summer’s here, and that means it’s essential to protect yourself from the higher risk of sun damage. Sun-damaged skin ages more quickly. There are also other skincare concerns that crop up in the heat, such as sweating. Here are some frequently asked questions about summer skin damage, as well as how you can help prevent it and treat sun damage if it does occur.

Do Acne Scars Get Worse in the Summer?

Many wonder if the sun causes acne scars or at least makes acne scars worse. The truth is, we aren’t exactly sure. There is one study that showed that exposure to UV light increased the size of scars. However, another showed the opposite. Still, it’s a good idea to protect your skin extra carefully if you have acne to possibly minimize scarring.

How Do You Take Care of Your Skin in the Summer Heat?

Besides the sun, there’s also the heat to contend with. As temperatures reach 90 and higher (and even in lower temperatures with humidity added to the mix), you begin to sweat. Sweating in and of itself is good for your body and has a lot of purposes; however, sweat that’s left on your skin can damage it and cause irritation. Your skin sweats out impurities, but if left on your skin, they can become reabsorbed. Also, sweat can alter the pH of your skin, leading to rashes or irritation. So on sweaty days, make sure you’re washing your face especially well.

How Do You Prevent Sun Damage during the Summer?

Sunscreen is essential during the summer months (and beyond). Be sure to read the directions and reapply when the bottle says to, or earlier if you’re swimming or sweating. Avoid being out in the sun during its peak hours, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., if you can. If you do, don’t forget your sunscreen, and consider some protective clothing such as a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
