What is submental liposuction and how does it work?

submental liposuction

Liposuction is the process of removal of unwanted fat from parts of the body. Liposuction is often done on areas of stubborn fat such as the belly, hips, and legs. It can also be done on the chin (submental fat). Here’s how submental liposuction works.

Who can get facial liposuction?

First of all, this procedure is not right for everyone. This procedure should only be done on those who don’t plan on losing a lot of weight after the procedure. While removing a little fat from the face can help the overall look, removing too much fat off the face can leave it looking gaunt and aged. So if surgery removes a bit, and then more is lost through weight loss, the end result can be too much fat lost which works against you.

Your plastic surgeon will be the best one to determine whether submental liposuction is best for you, or whether another procedure like buccal fat pad removal might work better in your case.

Procedure

Submental liposuction is an outpatient procedure that may be able to be done under local anesthesia (depending on whether other procedures will be done at the same time). The procedure takes about an hour. The plastic surgeon makes an incision along the face, after which a portion of fat is removed using a cannula which sucks out the fat.

Whereas liposuction elsewhere on the body involves removing many pounds of fat, only a few ounces of fat will be removed from the chin. Depending on your case and your wants and needs, your doctor may also perform other cosmetic procedures at the same time, such as a facelift.

Recovery process

After your chin liposuction, the incision area will have wrap bandages in place. These will be worn for the next 1-2 days, after which they will only be worn at night for 7-10 days. Swelling and redness will be present at first as the area heals from surgery. You should feel comfortable about your facial appearance after 2-3 weeks, and full healing takes about 6 months.
