Sinus drainage solutions

Sinus drainage

Sinus drainage, or postnasal drip, often occurs during and after illness. It’s a result of mucus from the sinus cavities draining down the back of the throat and into the stomach. It can be problematic in that it often causes a cough, an annoying tickling sensation in the throat, a sore or raw throat, hoarseness, and the need to constantly clear your throat.

Home remedies

There are some things you can do at home to help provide relief for sinus drainage. A humidifier will help you breathe easily. Stay hydrated to thin the mucus and make it easier to drain. At bedtime, sleep in a reclined position to allow for drainage and so that mucus doesn’t collect in your throat. To clear out mucus from the sinuses, nasal irrigation devices like a neti pot can help wash out excess mucus and give you relief from that mucus dripping down your throat for a while. If these measures are not providing adequate relief, consider medication to help (see next section).

Medication

Some medications may help with sinus drainage. Nasal sprays are one option. Nasal decongestants may also help with postnasal drip, but shouldn’t be used for more than 3 days to avoid dependence. Both nasal sprays and nasal decongestants can also help with a stuffy nose if you’re experiencing that symptom as well. If the cause of your postnasal drip is allergies, allergy medications (antihistamines) may help reduce your symptoms, including postnasal drip.

Other solutions

If your postnasal drip is the result of frequent sinus infections or chronic rhinitis, a minimally invasive procedure may be your best solution. Clarifix is one such solution. It uses cryotherapy to stop the symptoms of chronic rhinitis, including postnasal drip, at the source. A balloon sinuplasty is a good option for those with chronic sinusitis. It utilizes a “balloon” to inflate the inside of the nasal cavities, allowing them to drain and reducing the instance of sinus infections. Both procedures take just minutes to perform and provide long term relief.
