What is the Difference Between a Balloon Sinuplasty and a Septoplasty?

balloon sinuplasty

Over the years, techniques in sinus surgery have changed as new technology has emerged and methods have been fine-tuned. One of the recent innovations in sinus surgery is the introduction of balloon sinuplasty, which is a minimally invasive treatment that requires no cutting or removal. A rhinoplasty is a nasal surgery that changes the shape of the nose to improve appearance, breathing, or both. It is important to talk to your doctor about which procedure is best for you and your goals.

Here are some differences between a Balloon Sinuplasty and a Septoplasty

Balloon Sinuplasty

A balloon sinuplasty is a treatment designed to drain blocked sinuses without cutting or removing any parts of the nose. A balloon sinuplasty is a good option for those who suffer from chronic sinus infections, sinus congestion, and other sinus conditions. Inspired by a technique used in heart procedures, a tiny balloon is inserted into the block’s sinuses and then inflated. The inflation gently opens the sinuses, unblocking the passageway without any cutting or tissue removal. A saline rinse may be sprayed in the nose to help remove debris, and then the balloon is removed. It is usually done right in the office and has very few side effects and complications.

Septoplasty

A septoplasty is a more invasive and complicated procedure. As with most surgeries, a septoplasty requires general anesthesia and weeks of recovery after the procedure. In a septoplasty, cartilage and skin can be removed and rearranged to allow for better breathing. This procedure is performed to correct a deviated septum. Surgery is often done to correct breathing difficulties, birth-defect, or repair deformities due to an injury. As with any major surgery, septoplasty  has several risks, including:

·      Bleeding

·      Infection

·      Adverse reaction to anesthesia

·      Scarring

·      Difficulty breathing through the nose

·      Persistent swelling around the nose

Although septoplasty and other surgical solutions to sinus problems can be effective, they require a longer recovery time and are a more invasive treatment option. Balloon sinuplasty, however, is proven to be an effective solution with great results and very minimal downtime.

If you suffer from chronic sinus problems, talk to your doctor about exploring a solution such as a balloon sinuplasty or a rhinoplasty. Your doctor can speak with you about realistic goals and expectations for either of the procedures and recommend the best course of action for you and your goals.
