Rhinoplasty FAQs: All You Wanted to Know About Nose Jobs

nose job

Deciding to undergo any type of plastic surgery is a big decision. A rhinoplasty, sometimes called a nose job, is a particularly big decision due to the nose’s prominent placement on the face. So, it’s no surprise that many patients have questions regarding nose surgery. Here are some of them.

Can I Get Any Nose Shape I Want?

You can, but a good plastic surgeon will have an expert and experienced eye for facial symmetry and proportions and will help you decide what looks best for you while also taking your concerns and requests in mind. It’s also important to weigh the pros and cons of drastically changing your nose shape vs. more subtle yet effective changes. In the end, it is up to you, but it’s highly advised to take into strong consideration what your plastic surgeon recommends.

When Will My Nose Look Normal after a Nose Job?

When it comes to how long it takes for a nose job to heal, there are several milestones along the way. At about one week post-procedure, when the bandages are removed, your nose will have bruising, swelling, and redness, decreasing significantly in the next few weeks. You may feel confident going out around two weeks after your procedure. Swelling is the last thing to go. The majority of it will be gone by the six-month mark. All in all, it takes a year for your nose to lose all the swelling and look like its final healed version. Compared to a lifetime of a nose that makes you feel confident, a year isn’t so bad!

When Will I Get To See My New Nose?

Some patients are surprised to discover they won’t see their new nose right away. That’s because, after surgery, the nose will be covered in bandaids to aid in the healing process. At your follow-up appointment about a week after your rhinoplasty, the bandages will be removed, and you’ll get an initial view of your nose. It’s important to note that plenty of swelling and some bruising will still be present, but you’ll have a better idea of what the final result will look like. This is an emotional experience for many patients when they first see the nose they’ve dreamed of!

How Long Does a Nose Job Last?

A nose job is a permanent procedure. If you have a hump removed, for example, it will never “grow back.” If you have a boxy tip made into a slimmer tip, it won’t eventually go back to the shape it was before. There is one exception to this, and that is the fact that the nose continues to change shape with age. But this is something that happens slowly over decades.
