Botched Rhinoplasty? A Revision Rhinoplasty Can Help

revision rhinoplasty

Plastic surgery is not always perfect. Sometimes, it doesn’t go the way we expected. In the case of rhinoplasties, there are several things that can go wrong either aesthetically or functionally, but a revision rhinoplasty can help remedy them.

Why Might Someone Need a Revision Rhinoplasty?

A revision rhinoplasty may be needed if there are complications after the first rhinoplasty (also called a primary rhinoplasty). A rhinoplasty is a very delicate procedure. The function of the nose can be compromised and breathing issues can develop, and those will need to be fixed. Other times, the results are not as desired. Sometimes the procedure was too drastic and too much was removed. Whatever the case, a revision rhinoplasty allows a surgeon to go in and remedy things.

How Long Do You Have to Wait for a Revision Rhinoplasty?

It’s important to note that you will need to give your initial rhinoplasty time to fully heal before you know whether you’ll need a revision or not. While you’ll get a good look at your new nose around two weeks after the procedure, swelling, bruising, and redness will still be present. The majority of swelling will go away about six months after your operation; however, it will take a year or longer for all swelling to go away. If you’re unhappy with the look or function of your nose, it’s important to wait about a year to give it time to heal.

What Is a Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure Like?

As a patient, a revision rhinoplasty procedure may seem pretty similar to the first rhinoplasty. However, this is a much more difficult procedure than an initial rhinoplasty because the surgeon has to work around previous scar tissue. In a reconstructive rhinoplasty, cartilage may be needed from elsewhere in the body to reshape the nose depending on the reason for the revision. Afterwards, there will be packing and bandages that your doctor will remove at the post-operative visit.

How to Avoid Needing a Revision Rhinoplasty

The answer to this question starts before you even consider getting a rhinoplasty to begin with. It’s extremely important to choose your surgeon carefully. Read reviews from other patients. Make sure to schedule a consultation so you can get a feel for the surgeon and how confident they are in your particular case. However, even with the best surgeon at the helm, sometimes unpredictable things happen. Follow all aftercare instructions given to you by your doctor and keep up with appointments to minimize complications.
