Can a sinus infection cause dizziness?

Yes. One possible side effect of sinus infections is a feeling of dizziness. It might be hard to see how an infection in the sinuses has any effect on your sense of equilibrium and balance. So it’s first important to explain the interconnection of your ears and nose. Your ears actually connect to your nasal passageways. So issues that affect the nose may have an effect on the ears, and vice versa (and the throat for that matter).

How does a sinus infection cause dizziness?

During a sinus infection, fluid buildup and blockages in the sinus cavities can cause fluid to build up in the ears as well. This is because there’s nowhere for it to drain into. This puts pressure on the inner parts of the ear, the eardrum and the Eustachian tube, which in turn creates feelings of dizziness and vertigo.

The vestibule labyrinth is the part of the ear responsible (along with the help of input from other parts of the body) for helping us maintain our sense of equilibrium and balance. The fluid buildup that occurs in the ear puts pressure on this part of the ear. This causes dizziness, which can in turn lead to nausea.

When to see a doctor

Experiencing dizziness often means the sinus infection is worsening, so if you feel moderate to significant dizziness, it’s time to pay a visit to your doctor or an ENT specialist for further help. They may prescribe antibiotics to rid your body of the infection sooner than your body would take to clear the infection itself.
